What is a solid perfume?
Let’s begin by breaking down what exactly a solid perfume is. Imagine your favorite scent, but instead of being a liquid spray, it’s housed in a compact little tin or a chic portable stick. It’s like the chapstick of the fragrance world. Unlike traditional liquid perfumes that rely on alcohol as a base, solid perfumes typically use a wax-like base such as beeswax, shea butter, or cocoa butter, mixed with fragrance oils. This creates a balm or cream-like product that can be directly applied to the skin.
My personal journey with solid perfumes began recently, in July 2023. I dipped my toe into the world of solid perfumes, testing only one product so far. But let me tell you, that single experience was enough to pique my interest in this relatively unknown area of fragrance.
The Application: Where and How?

The most important question: Is solid or spray perfume better? The answer isn’t as simple as you might think; it comes down to personal preference and your unique needs. If you’re looking for something lightweight, easy to carry, and less likely to spill, solid perfume might be a great choice. Solid perfumes can also be more discreet, with their scents often being less intense than their liquid counterparts. This was something I noticed with the solid perfume I tested; the scent was pleasantly present but not overpoweringly strong.
Disadvantages of Solid Perfume
Like any product, solid perfumes have their downsides. For one, they tend to have a weaker sillage, meaning the scent doesn’t travel as far from the body as it does with spray perfumes. Some people, myself included, might find that the fragrance doesn’t last as long on the skin. Additionally, because of the high wax content, some might feel a bit waxy on the skin, which I did notice with the product I tested.
